Chief Minister Pramod Sawant met with Minister of State for External Affairs Meenaxi Lekhi in Delhi today to raise concerns regarding the revocation of passports belonging to Goans with Portuguese citizenship.
Sawant, joined by Minister Aleixo Sequeira, also discussed challenges in acquiring Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status after this revocation.
“Met and interacted with the Union Minister of State for External Affairs @M_Lekhi along with Goa Cabinet Minister @AleixoASequeira. Discussed the issue of revocation of passport of Goans acquiring Portuguese citizenship. Also urged the Minister to look into the issue of Goans facing difficulties in obtaining OCI cards after surrendering their passport,” the CM said, in his post on X.
Last week, the CM assured the Legislative Assembly to discuss the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs, acknowledging the seriousness of the dual citizenship issue. His assurance followed demands from the Opposition for a quick resolution as several Goans who registered their birth in Portugal had their Indian passports revoked, which has resulted in complications in obtaining visas and OCI status.
