The cost of garlic has skyrocketed, affecting consumers across the state. The shortage of garlic in the market has driven prices to unprecedented levels, leaving both vendors and consumers grappling with the economic impact.
According to vegetable vendor Rafiq, who has been witnessing the market dynamics firsthand, garlic prices have surged from Rs 200 per kilogram to nearly Rs 500 per kilogram. "Previously, vendors could secure sacks of garlic worth Rs 3000 to Rs 4000, but now they're fetching as high as Rs 15,000," Rafiq lamented. He noted a significant shift in consumer behaviour, with people opting to purchase smaller quantities due to the inflated prices. "Customers are buying half the quantity they used to. Despite its essential nature, they're forced to adjust their purchases," he said, anticipating a price reduction by March 15. “The prices will go down as the days pass by,” said Rafiq.
One concerned customer highlighted the impact of the price hike on household budgets. "With prices exceeding Rs 350, it's becoming increasingly challenging to afford garlic as before," the customer expressed.
Another customer echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the strain on kitchen budgets. "Previously, Rs 50 would fetch us a substantial quantity of garlic, but now we're left with much less. The prices are different everywhere how will the poor fill their stomachs," the customer lamented.
The sentiment among consumers remains consistent, with many expressing the need to adapt to the current economic reality. "What once cost Rs 200 per kilogram now barely buys a kilogram, forcing us to adjust our household budgets," shared another customer.
