Cong says government’s honeymoon period is over

PANAJI

The Congress Legislature Party which met on Friday ahead of the marathon budget session of the assembly which begins from Monday has announced that it will hold the government accountable for its “failed promises” as its rule nears one year of completion.

Addressing the media, Leader of Opposition Chandrakant “Babu” Kavlekar said that the government can no longer cling to the excuse that it didn’t have enough time to complete what they promised. “It has been nearly one year since the government is here. It cannot any longer say that it didn’t have the time to fulfill its promises,”

Kavlekar said.

When asked what would be the issues the Opposition will raise, Kavlekar said that while the party’s MLAs are yet to receive replies to their answers. The final list of issues would be decided once the answers are received, he added.

“At our meeting, we have decided to come up with a plan according to the questions. As per that plan we will decide who will do what, take up what questions and who will ask supplementary questions,” Kavlekar said.

“As on date we have not received answers to the questions we have asked. These should be available soon and depending on the answers issues will come up,” Kavlekar said.

When questioned what are the “unfulfilled promises” according to his party, Kavlekar mentioned the coal issue, nationalisation of rivers and dearth of jobs in Goa.

When questioned on the party’s strategy over the Speaker’s expected refusal to allow the tabling of motions on statues, especially the Congress resolution on Dr Jack de Sequeira’s statue, Kavlekar said that the party would meet the Speaker on the first day of the session before deciding on the further course of action.

“We are yet to be officially informed of any decision regarding our resolution on the statue. What we know is what we have read so far in the newspapers. After the Governor’s speech we will meet the Speaker and decide what is to be done next,” Kavlekar said.
