Congress blames govt for floods in Panaji, wants probe into bad roads

PANAJI

The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Friday blamed the State government for the water-logging in many areas of the Panaji like 18th June Road, Caranzalem, Miramar, Campal and St Inez. Congress spokesperson Adv Yatish Naik stated that heavy rains were not an excuse for the government as rains were not new to Goa.

Addressing a press conference Adv Naik said, “Panaji is being clogged by GSIDC, IPSCDL and the government.”

Adv Naik also spoke about the government’s plan to turn the state’s capital city into a smart city asking if this was how they imagined Panaji - with potholed and water-logged roads. He stressed that turning a city into a smart city should first mean that the city has good roads, good footpaths, gardens and 24 hour water and electricity supplies. “The government has lost track of the whole aim of a smart city,” he said.

“The unconstitutionally engineered State government has miserably failed in road engineering,” stated Naik, while asking for a time-bound vigilance inquiry to be set up to look into the bad

condition of the roads in the capital city.

“The vigilance inquiry must include independent technical persons to find out who is accountable for the roads that get washed away in the first monsoons after they are built,” demanded Naik, while saying that it looked as though the government was “allergic” to good roads.

As an example, he cited the Miramar-Dona Paula Road that had developed cracks after the government’s attempts to make it a concrete road when it was perfectly smooth before the government decided to ‘fix it.’
