In what could be music to the ears of consumers frequenting Mapusa market, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) is seriously thinking of discouraging 2-wheelers from entering the municipal market.

The newly appointed market committee members along with MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza on Saturday paid a surprise visit to the market to get a firsthand knowledge about the happenings in the market.

Sources informed that various issues plaguing the market and ways of finding solutions to problems were informally discussed among the group.

“Issues about bringing discipline in the market, disallowing vendors from stocking items during the nights, leaving entry points open throughout were deliberated,” a source informed.

“The issue of not allowing two-wheelers inside the market was also touched upon,” the source added.

In the past, people visiting the famed market especially senior citizens complained about two-wheeler riders zipping in and out of the market causing inconvenience to pedestrian shoppers.

Market Committee Chairman Sushant Harmalkar admitted that he along with his colleagues and the MMC chairman had visited the market.

“Normally, we visit the market as consumers. Today’s visit was different. We want to bring some changes in the market and our visit was to learn about different aspects of the market,” Harmalkar said.

Braganza informed that he accompanied his recently elected market committee team to basically get a “feel” of the market.

“We have not taken any firm decisions as such. Informally, a host of issues were deliberated. If any decisions have to be taken we will discuss with the council and take appropriate steps,” Braganza said.
