A flying squad team attached to the office of the North Goa Collector has stopped the ongoing work carried out by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) on its property at Anjuna beach.
On receiving a complaint, a flying squad team rushed to the site and conducted an inspection and temporarily stopped the work which involved hill cutting and levelling of the area.
A report is expected to be submitted to the office of the Collector, North Goa early next week.
The complainant, Desmond Alvares, informed that the work was illegal as it was being carried out in No Development Zone (NDZ) and comes under coastal regulation zone-4 category (CRZ-4).
“This is in total violation of the CRZ law. They cannot construct concrete or even erect a steel structure in the area. They can set up a wooden structure in the area on temporary basis,” Alvares said.
He said the proponent of the project has displayed some licences at the site but these permissions can be challenged before appropriate authorities.
Around five months back, locals in the area had protested against the beautification work carried out by the GTDC at the site.
The locals had then alleged that the corporation had leased the property to some corporates and had threatened to stop the work in the area.
However, a notification board at the site showed that the GTDC was carrying out up-gradation and beautification of Anjuna beach.
The licences obtained from the Town Planning, Anjuna panchayat and CRZ are listed on the board.
