A proposal to notify a tiger reserve in Goa is under consideration of the Goa government, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the Goa legislative assembly on Friday in a written reply.

Stressing that no final decision has been taken yet, Parrikar said a contiguous area of the four existing sanctuaries namely, Madei Wildlife Sanctuary, Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park, Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary and the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, which has no habitation or have fewer, small settlements is being considered as “core area” of the proposed Tiger Reserve.

Parrikar also said that the issue was last discussed at the Goa State Board of Wildlife meeting held in October 2016 after the proposal for setting up a Tiger Reserve in the State was mooted by the National Tiger Conservation Authority following the All India Tiger Estimation of 2014.

Parrikar’s written reply was in response to an unstarred question tabled by Velim MLA, Filipe Nery Rodrigues, who wanted to know what would be the impact on people living in the areas and the agricultural activities being carried out there.

Conservationists have been lobbying for a tiger reserve after the presence of the majestic striped cat in the Goan forests has been established in the last few years through pug mark recordings as well as capture on trap-cameras by forest officials.

A case of a tiger killed when it accidentally fell into a trap laid by poachers for other animals was also reported in
