Citizens will have to soon cough up for parking on the main streets of Mapusa, as the government has notified pay parking for two-wheelers and four-wheelers at five key areas around the municipal market.
As per the notification the pay parking will be applicable 24 hours on all days.
The Collector and District Magistrate, North Mamu Hage (IAS) has notified five areas around the market square “ Aram soda lane opposite the taxi-stand, main market road from Union Pharmacy to Loja Chimulkar, (Canara bank), ‘chanekar’ line, the North zone education office and road adjacent to Mapusa Clinic “ as pay parking.
The Mapusa Municipal Council had passed a resolution in April 2022 to declare these areas as pay parking.
As per the notification the approved parking fees for two-wheelers is Rs 10 for the first two hours and Rs 5 for subsequent hour while for four-wheelers it will be Rs 20 for two hours and Rs 10 for subsequent hour.
The stretch of road from Union Pharmacy to Loja Chimulkar, (Canara bank) and the road in front of Aram soda building (both sides of inside lane) besides the road stretch of Usapkar chana shop (inside lane), road near education zonal office building (both sides) and road adjacent to Mapusa Clinic has been reserved only for two-wheeler parking.
Similarly, the stretch of road in front of Aram Soda building (both sides of outside lane excluding the area earmarked for black and yellow taxis) and the road stretch in front of Usapkar chana shop (outside lane) has been reserved exclusively for four-wheeler parking.
The district magistrate said before implementing the pay parking scheme a wide publicity should be ensured for the knowledge of the general motorists and local residents.
Directions have also been issued that necessary signages/notice boards with rate of parking fees and time frame shall be prominently displayed in pay parking areas/stretch of roads.
Besides, the parking attendants will have to wear proper uniform and display proper photo ID cards.
Parking fees once charged shall be considered valid for any other parking location within the MMC jurisdiction for that time slot only.
Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council, Priya Mishal informed that the council will work out the estimated cost of the parking areas and accordingly float a tender to appoint a contractor for collection of fees.
“The process will take some time as we have to work out the estimates and then issue a tender to appoint a parking contractor,” Mishal said.
