Highlighting the importance of mother tongue, Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on Thursday said he has given directions to Goa University to start Konkani education centres in four states.
“A substantial population have their mother tongue as Konkani in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa. Considering this and being the Chancellor of Goa University, I have given directions to Goa University to start Konkani education centres in these four states. These centres will be started soon in Cochin and Mangalore,” he said.
The governor was addressing an interaction meeting with panchas and sarpanchas of five panchayat bodies of Cortalim constituency in the presence of Cortalim MLA Anton Vas.
“As per the Constitution, the mother tongue must be given top priority and I will do maximum to promote the Konkani language.
"Konkani is an ancient and a very beautiful language and promoting it is the need of the hour,” said Pillai.
Pillai also called upon politicians to keep aside family ties while serving people as their representatives.
"Amalgamating all types of wealth in the name of public work is not correct. Elected representatives should show love, affection, kindness and dedication across society while serving the people.”
“I have served as the governor of Mizoram before being appointed as Goa and while the GDP of Goa is the highest, the GDP of Mizoram was the lowest. However, the Happiness Index of Mizoram is the highest and now Goa must go higher in the Happiness Index and reach the top position because the satisfaction of the people is of utmost importance,” the governor added.
