An iron hook protruding out of a road at the busy IOC junction in Vasco has led to a traffic hazard, evoking angry reactions from motorists.
The IOC junction is a crucial junction connecting two important and busy roads “ the F L Gomes road with Swatantra path and a road leading to the port.
The iron hook protruding from the road at this junction has caused a lot of inconvenience to motorists and two bikes are reported to have skidded at the site in the last few days.
Several accidents have also been averted as oncoming motorists have nearly collided with each other in a bid to avoid the iron hook.
According to information, Gammon India engaged in the construction of a 4-lane flyover connecting Verna and MPT had proposed a pillar at the IOC Junction and a proposed bay of the flyover to get vehicles into Vasco.
Accordingly, Gammon had dug up the area and the pillar work was carried out for a few days at the site.
However a few days later, MMC and Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida stopped work of the pillar following public objections that the flyover bay entering Vasco would cause further congestion in the city.
It was also later revealed that prior permission was not sought from PDA and MMC to build a pillar. Gammon India then cancelled the plans of the pillar, covered the dug up area and resurfaced the road with tar.
But with heavy movement of vehicles, the road has developed potholes and the entire area is open exposing the iron rods used by Gammon India.
Speaking to reporters, activist Vikram Sarmalkar said the place has become an accident site due to shoddy work by Gammon.
“I request Gammon to immediately clear the road of all such obstacles. They have to think of the safety of the people,” said Sarmalkar.
Another resident, Devendra Shirodkar, said the hook could cause a mishap and could also damage tyres.
“The hook is now protruding and could lead to serious consequences,” said Shirodkar.
