The demand was made at the Legislator's Day function celebrated at State Legislative Assembly Complex, Porvorim.
Speaking on the sidelines of the function, Lobo said, "It's time for every Goan to think. Different political parties have different opinions and sometimes they may even disagree on various issues. Some political parties wanted merger of Goa into Maharashtra. But like-minded Goans who were of the opinion that Goan identity should remain and it should not become a district of another state fought for it."
Pointing out that none of the governments in the past have given importance to the day of Opinion Poll, Lobo said, "Our next generation does not even know what is Opinion Poll. There is a need to make them understand what is Opinion Poll. It should form part of the History curriculum with details on how Goa managed to remain as a separate identity, how it attained statehood, who fought for the Opinion Poll and who opposed it and how we won it finally.
Making a strong demand that the State Government should celebrate 50 years of Opinion Poll as a state function, Lobo said, "In 2012, while demanding that the statue of our first chief minister Bhausaheb Bandodkar be installed at the State Legislative Assembly Complex, Porvorim; we had also demanded that the statue of the Father of the Opinion Poll Dr Jack de Sequeira also be installed or else it looks like something is incomplete. He fought so that Goa remains a separate identity and led the movement of the Opinion Poll."
"Opinion poll day should be observed in schools, colleges, all government offices including the secretariat and State Legislative Assembly. We should not forget that today Manohar Parrikar is the Chief Minister only because of the Opinion Poll", he pointed out.
