The three-day Konkan Fruit Festival organised by the Botanical Society of Goa got underway on Friday at the promenade of the Opinion Poll Square and Ravindra Bhavan playing host to a vast array of fruits produced on the Konkan coast.
The festival was inaugurated by a progressive farmer from Nuvem, Laban D’Souza, in the presence of Usha Sardesai, We for Fatorda, Raj Pai Panandikar, president Botanical Society of Goa, Miguel Braganza, Botanical Society secretary.
An unique festival aimed at preserving the local fruit biodiversity, hundreds of people who visited the festival marveled at the vast array of fruits, some not so popular, some almost forgotten, that are brought to the festival by farmers from across the Konkan belt.
Miguel Braganza said the Konkan fruit festival is the perfect place for all those people tucked away in the remote corners of the region to showcase their fruit-based products such as jams, pickles and even wines.
Live entertainment, food stalls, workshops and competitions are earmarked at the venue. Stalls displaying and selling wares such as fresh fruit, fruit products, plants and planting material, garden tools and implements have been set up.
