Traffic cops to act tough
on violators from July
Licences could be suspended for 3 months
PANAJI Come July 1, Goa Police will turn up the heat on the roads.
As a part of its sustained drive to reduce death on roads, from July 1, cops will begin seizure of driving licences of the the drivers and rider for violating traffic rules such as over-speeding, found driving under the influence of alcohol, carrying passengers in goods carriages and using mobile phone while driving.
Speaking to the media at police headquarters in Panaji on Thursday, Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Muktesh Chander said, “The driving licence will then be forwarded to the transport department for suspension for a period of at least three months. The move comes in the wake of directives issued last year by the Supreme Court committee on road safety.”
“There are 30 murders in last one year and 311 deaths due to accidents, this is a serious issue,” said the DGP adding that it is high time to curb this state of affairs.
It was informed that a meeting was held recently with all stakeholders, whereby everyone was made aware of their role and are now expect to adopt prompt corrective measure.
"A major problem in Goa is that there is no central divider on roads. Such dividers are a norm on roads of seven metres width and if the road marking doesn't work then a physical barricade must be put in place."
Meanwhile, Goa Police has also forwarded a proposal for four new interceptors in the State.
Currently, the State functions with only one interceptor which malfunctions more often than not.
In addition to this, road safety classes for public are set to begin from July 2. These classes will be held every Saturday at Porvorim and Margao. The first few batches are expected to comprise government functionaries and cops.
