MAPUSA
Next time don’t be surprised if a postman delivers house tax bill at your door step in Mapusa.
Mapusa Municipal Council has decided to accept the proposal of the post office to offer a host of services including speed post to deliver the civic body’s correspondence to its residents.
The post office has agreed to deliver house tax bills to the residents of Mapusa at the rate of Rs 15 per bill by speed post.
The council has found that the service will not only save the civic body revenue but will also offer reliable service.
With 21,500 structures evaluated for house tax in the city, the council will have to pay post office Rs 3.22 lakh per annum for the delivery of house tax bills by speed post.
“We employ six staff to deliver house tax bills and spend around Rs 22 lakh on their salary. With the speed post proposal we will save around Rs 18 lakh. More importantly the six workers can be deployed for some other job,” said Rohan Kavlekar, Chairperson, Mapusa Municipal Council.
He said many of the bills remain undelivered and brought back to the office, as the municipality staff either finds the owners unavailable or the house locked.
“The speed post service will take care of this problem too,” he added.
The chairperson said that the post office has also offered other services such as to deliver awareness campaign pamphlets and other correspondence to the residents of Mapusa.
“For the moment the council has given a go-ahead for delivery of house tax bills by speed post on trial basis,” Kavlekar informed.
