The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said rainfall activity is very likely to increase and sounded a yellow alert as it predicted heavy rainfall at most places in the State in the next four days.
“An off-shore trough at mean sea level runs roughly along south Maharashtra Karnataka-north Kerala coasts while southwesterly to westerly winds prevail in the lower levels of the atmosphere over Goa up to 4 km above mean sea level which is expected to bring a good amount of rains,” the IMD said in a press-note.
The State is expected to receive heavy rainfall which can go even above 64.4 mm at a few places from June 24 to 27.
The Meteorological Department has also predicted short intense spells and winds gusting to around 40 kmph.
Squally weather with wind speeds of 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely along and off the South Maharashtra-Goa coast till June 27.
Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off the Goa coast for the next four days.
Meanwhile, after experiencing dry weather for the last four days, several places in the State received rainfall.
In the last 24 hours, Sanguem received the highest amount of rain at 63.3 mm followed by Mormugao at 52.6 mm and 45.0 mm at Canacona.
The capital city of Panaji recorded 19.8 mm of rain while Margao and Ponda received 32 mm each.
The average cumulative rainfall in the State from June 1 to 23 was 204.2 mm as against a normal average of 670.7 mm indicating a deficit of 69.6 mm rainfall.
