Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Wednesday announced that an open drainage system will be installed at the newly constructed Vasco Fish Market to permanently resolve the drainage issues raised by traditional fish vendors.
He assured that the work would commence on Thursday and all pending issues would be resolved within the next 15 days.
The assurance came after a joint inspection of the market along with officials of GSUDA, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), police, fish vendors and other authorities concerned.
"Every new project has teething problems. The drainage got choked because fish scales and wastewater were passing through small drain pipelines. We have now decided to construct an open drainage system and work will begin from tomorrow. Within the next 15 days, the entire issue will be resolved," Salkar said.
Salkar also clarified that the inspection had already been scheduled for Tuesday and was delayed by a day as GSUDA officials were engaged in other official works.
The MLA maintained that the market was otherwise functioning well and urged people not to politicise the issue.
Explaining the proposed solution, Salkar said the new drainage design would allow wastewater to flow through an open channel directly into outlet chambers, preventing blockages caused by fish waste and ensuring smooth drainage.
He further assured that permanent drainage facilities would be provided wherever required and that a dedicated cleaning agency would be appointed to maintain hygiene inside the market.
