Nullah gets choked, rain water and slush enters into some shops

The pre-monsoon showers exposed the chinks in the monsoon preparedness works carried out by Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).
The first pre-monsoon showers choked a major Nullah in Vithalwadi behind the Maruti Temple, resulting in overflowing of the Nullah.
The overflowing water and muck came on the road and entered in at least five shops in the area.
The area in front of the North Education Zone building and the Chacha Nehru Park was also scattered with muck.
A store room belonging to Shailesh Sirsat of M/s Saikrupa Metal Works, a cold-drink shop, an advocate’s office and other shops along the road were flooded with rain water and the mud that came along with it.
The main reason for the rain water to overflow was due to choking of a nearby Nullah with plastic, mud and other residue.
“The mud along with the rain water entered the shops because of the ongoing sewerage work in the town. The Nullah and the gutters got choked with the residue and therefore entered our shops,” said Sirsat owner of M/s Saikrupa Metal Works.
Mapusa received some light to heavy pre-monsoon showers on Wednesday night.
The Mapusa Fire Brigade personnel rushed to the site at around 7.15 am on Thursday and cleared the thick slush on the road behind the Maruti Temple near the old ST stand.
Local councillor, Tushar Tople informed that the Nullah was recently de-silted by MMC.
“The first showers brought the slush and other residue along and choked the Nullah and that is why all the muck spilled over to the road and entered some of the shops,” Tople said.
He blamed some unscrupulous people, who dump plastic bottles and other material into the Nullah which leads to choking of the main city drains.
The much touted pre-monsoon works in Mapusa was carried out under the personal supervision of Chairperson Sandeep Falari.
Mapusa Municipal Council had taken the lead to begin pre-monsoon works from March 1 onwards as per an immaculate ward-wise plan drawn by the chairperson.
“There will be zero tolerance to flooding in Mapusa this monsoon. I will personally monitor the ongoing de-silting work in the city,” Falari had promised then.
Almost three rounds of pre-monsoon works were completed in all the wards in Mapusa and major Nullahs were taken up for de-silting.
