In a display of compassion towards wildlife, local environmentalists rescued more than 300 frog tadpoles trapped in a drying natural pond at Poriem village in Sattari Taluka, after the region experienced a dry spell.
According to available information, the prolonged break in rainfall caused the water level in several natural ponds and water bodies around Poriem to drop drastically.
As a result, hundreds of tadpoles were left stranded in shallow muddy water, struggling for survival as the ponds gradually dried up.
The situation came to the notice of local environmentalist Arjun Gavankar, who immediately realised the seriousness of the situation and launched a rescue operation.
He was joined by Rama Gavankar, and together they carefully collected over 300 tadpoles from the drying pond and safely released them into a nearby permanent natural water body with sufficient water. Their prompt action ensured the survival of the young amphibians.
Speaking after the rescue operation, Arjun Gavankar said, "Frogs are an essential part of the ecosystem and play a vital role in controlling insects that damage agricultural crops.”
“Protecting frogs and other wildlife is the moral responsibility of every citizen. Conserving biodiversity is crucial for maintaining ecological balance, and even small efforts like these can make a significant difference.”
Environmental experts point out that frogs breed extensively during the monsoon, and their eggs hatch into tadpoles that depend entirely on water for survival. When rainfall suddenly stops and small ponds dry up, thousands of tadpoles can perish. Relocating them to suitable water bodies is therefore considered an important step in conserving local biodiversity.
Sattari taluka is well-known for its rich forests, hills, streams and natural wetlands that support a wide variety of amphibians, fish, crabs, turtles and other aquatic life.
However, irregular rainfall patterns and the increasing drying up of natural water sources due to changing weather conditions are posing a growing threat to this biodiversity.
Residents have praised the quick response and environmental awareness shown by Arjun Gavankar and Rama Gavankar, describing their efforts as an inspiring example of community participation in wildlife conservation.
They also appealed to the public to come forward in protecting nature and its countless silent inhabitants whenever such situations arise.
