MAPUSA
Amidst all the doom and gloom narratives on development of Mapusa, there is finally something to cheer about for the people of the town and Bardez area.
The building housing the sub-registrar’s office has finally got a new elevator which will be made operational as early as in a week’s time.
Incidentally, the elevator has been put in place exactly one year after the issue of inconvenience caused to people visiting the sub-registrar office was raised during the monsoon session of the assembly last year.
The elevator in the building had stopped functioning more than a decade back inconveniencing people frequenting the sub-registrar.
Senior citizens and the disabled suffered the most, as they were forced to climb the stairs to reach the key government office.
“We have installed a new elevator in the building which is undergoing some test runs. Within a week’s time the elevator will be thrown open for the public,” said Srinet Kotwale, Managing Director of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).
Although, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had issued direction to repair the elevator eight months back, the work on the elevator took time as the old elevator was irreparable and had to be replaced.
GSIDC had to issue work order for a new elevator to replace the old defunct one.
With the fixing of the elevator, one of the long pending demands of the citizens in Mapusa and Bardez stands resolved.
It may be recalled the CM on one of his famous visits to Mapusa on October 3, last year, had visited the sub-registrar’s office and took serious note of the inconvenience caused to the public.
He had then issued directions to take immediate remedial measures to repair the elevator.
The issue of the condition of sub-registrar’s office had come up for discussion during the monsoon session of the State Assembly in July last year.
Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar had assured the House that prominent government offices, such as the Mapusa Sub-Registrar, which was regularly used by the public, would be shifted to the ground floor to facilitate easy access.
Aldona MLA, Glen Ticlo had raised the issue of the Mapusa Sub-Registrar office in the Assembly.
