Authorities have intensified arrangements in and around the Vitthal-Rukmini Temple, including security, traffic management, sanitation, parking facilities and amenities for pilgrims. Temporary toilets and other basic facilities have also been set up to ensure the smooth movement and comfort of devotees.
Large numbers of Warkaris from across Maharashtra and neighbouring states have already entered Pandharpur. Over the next two days, Goan Warkaris, who began their pilgrimage on foot several days ago, are also expected to reach the holy town.
Ashadhi Ekadashi marks the culmination of the 800-year-old Pandharpur Wari, during which millions of Warkaris walk barefoot for over 250 kilometres from Dehu and Alandi, singing devotional Abhangas in praise of Lord Vitthal.
The pilgrimage concludes at the Vitthal-Rukmini Temple in Pandharpur, Solapur district, where devotees offer prayers and seek the blessings of Lord Vitthal. Before entering the temple for darshan, pilgrims traditionally take a holy dip in the sacred Chandrabhaga River, which is considered an integral part of the pilgrimage.
