Members of the Revolutionary Goans Party on Wednesday protested against the pet coke handling at the Verna railway yard, warning the railway officials not to test the patience of the people affected by pollution.
While the railway officials promised the RGP workers that the coal dumped at the yard will be lifted away by noon, members warned of a stir in the event the railway properties across Goa are being used for coal or pet coke handling in the future.
Led by Teotonio D’Costa and others, including a number of RGP candidates, who had contested the just concluded Assembly elections, the RGP leaders confronted the railway officials, demanding the permission obtained from the statutory authorities such as the Goa State Pollution Control Board to control the handling of the pet coke at the Verna yard.
The railway official refused to reply to the queries raised by the workers, saying they can contact the railway higher ups for details. The official later informed that the pet coke dumped at the Verna railway yard will be lifted away today itself.
Heavy earth moving machinery was seen loading the wagons stationed at the Verna yard for the transportation of the pet coke to Jharkhand.
