Public anger is mounting over the ongoing nuisance of people consuming alcohol at the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTCL) bus stand in Mapusa. A recent viral video showing migrants and tourists drinking openly has renewed scrutiny of the lax enforcement by local authorities.

For months, residents and commuters have reported individuals, mostly migrants and tourists openly drinking at the terminal. The issue gained fresh attention after citizens filmed the activity and shared the footage online.

In response, the excise department raided several liquor outlets near the bus stand, fining some shops reportedly wholesale dealers for violations. However, locals slammed the action as delayed and inadequate.

“This was nothing but an eyewash. Why wait for a viral video to act? Drinking in public is banned in Goa. This isn’t new,” said Sunil Naik of Morod, Mapusa, who also criticised the police for failing to maintain order.

The Goa Excise Duty Act prohibits alcohol consumption in public places. Yet, enforcement appears lacking.

KTCL Chairman Ulhas Tuenkar acknowledged the issue, stating that the corporation had already raised the matter with the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).

“We asked the MMC for permission to construct a boundary wall to isolate the bus stand from municipal shops, many of which are liquor vendors,” Tuenkar said, adding that the wall would help prevent future violations.

Municipal officials confirmed they are reviewing KTCL’s proposal.

Meanwhile, passengers have voiced concerns over safety and hygiene.

“It’s uncomfortable for women and children. You don’t know when someone might get aggressive. There’s broken glass, bottles, it's a health hazard,” said Shilpa Desai, a commuter from Siolim.

Locals continue to urge authorities to act decisively, stressing the need for consistent policing and long-term solutions to restore order at the major transit hub.
