A small farming family from Bellad Bagewadi in Belagavi district, childless for 14 years, finally welcomed a baby - only to face a major medical crisis soon after delivery. However, a rare surgery performed by a team of doctors at KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital brought cheer to the family’s life.
The mother suffered PROM (Premature Rupture of Membranes) at 32 weeks of pregnancy and was shifted from Katti Hospital to Soukhyada Hospital, Belagavi. The baby was delivered by emergency LSCS by Dr Asmita A Katti and was immediately transferred to the NICU at KLE Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital.
Dr Santosh Kurbet had monitored the pregnancy based on ultrasound scans that showed intestinal dilatation. After birth, the 1.5 kg preterm newborn deteriorated rapidly, requiring intubation and ventilator support. Platelet counts fell sharply and clotting parameters worsened, suggesting severe intra-abdominal pathology and sepsis.
The baby was resuscitated, stabilised with transfusions, and taken for emergency surgery. Surgeons discovered a rare and serious condition—Giant Cystic Meconium Peritonitis (GCMP) with jejunal atresia and a foreshortened bowel.
Dr Kurbet, Professor of Paediatric Surgery with over 20 years of experience, successfully excised the cyst and performed a rare primary single-stage repair. The newborn recovered steadily, tolerated full feeds, and was discharged on day seven without complications.
The parents described the outcome as a miracle and thanked the team, including Dr Raghavendra Bhat, Dr Vinayak Jannu, Dr Brunda Kavi, as well as the NICU and OT staff. Hospital authorities and KAHER officials congratulated the doctors, noting that such successful single-stage surgeries for this rare condition have been reported in only a few cases worldwide.
