PANAJI
Civic group ‘Panjimites Against Casinos’ has criticised the new rules notified for casino vessels, alleging that they contain a loophole allowing entry of guests below 21 years of age if gambling areas are kept out of their access.
AAP State president Valmiki Naik, while addressing the media along with group members Chryselle D’Silva Dias, Amita Kanekar and Lucas Braganza, said the provision could negatively impact children.
“Even if they are restricted from gambling areas, their impressionable minds will still be influenced by the branding and advertising visible across the vessel,” Naik said.
He claimed that exposure to casino branding could normalise gambling among young people. “One of the main reasons for opposing casino gambling is its addictive nature. By allowing children on board, they are being exposed to it through advertisements and branding,” he alleged.
The group said the rules notified on Thursday supported their stand in a police complaint filed in April, seeking an FIR against casino directors for allegedly allowing entry to minors. “The government has now notified rules that support our stand but has failed to take action against casino companies for violating the law for years,” Naik said.
The members reiterated their opposition to casino operations in Panaji, alleging that the government’s regulatory framework continues to favour casinos over public interest. They said they would intensify their campaign against what they termed the State’s promotion of gambling.
