Residents of Curchorem have voiced strong opposition to the proposed Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), raising concerns over its location and its potential impact on the environment, nearby residents and traditional religious practices.
Locals fear that the project could lead to foul odour, groundwater contamination and health hazards if not properly planned and maintained.
Residents also questioned the construction of high retaining walls around the proposed plant site. According to them, the walls could obstruct the natural flow of river water, particularly during the monsoon season, leading to water stagnation and flooding.
They alleged that any disruption to the river's smooth flow could adversely affect the living conditions of people residing in the vicinity.
Another major concern raised by the locals pertains to the traditional immersion of Ganesh idols at the site. Residents claimed that the area has been used for generations for Ganesh Visarjan and holds religious and cultural significance for the community.
They fear that the construction and subsequent operation of the sewage treatment plant at the location would interfere with and diminish the sanctity of the traditional rituals associated with the immersion of Ganesh idols.
While acknowledging the importance of proper sewage treatment and sanitation infrastructure, residents maintained that development projects should not come at the cost of environmental degradation or the disruption of long-standing cultural and religious traditions.
The locals have demanded greater transparency from the authorities regarding the project's capacity, environmental impact, treatment technology and long-term maintenance plans. They have also called for a detailed public consultation before any final decision is taken.
Residents have appealed to the State Government, Goa State Pollution Control Board and other concerned departments to reconsider the location of the project and ensure that both environmental concerns and community sentiments are given due consideration before the project moves forward.
