Along with the other trash produced in homes, which is handed over to the door-to-door garbage collector, the one waste that could be neglected and be lying at home is e-waste. E-waste is made up of electronic products which are beyond repairs and includes, computers, televisions, VCRs, copiers, fax machines, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, etc. These products need to de disposed of scientifically. E-waste lying in the house can prove dangerous as it contains harmful chemicals like mercury, lead, barium, lithium, retardants, cadmium, etc. The negative health effects of these toxins on humans include damage to the brain, heart, liver, kidney and skeletal system. Door-to-door collection of e-waste was carried out in a mobile van by NGOs from residents at Moira, Aldona, Bastora, Nachinola and Ucassaim. Almost 430 kg of e-waste was reportedly collected. The e-waste collected will reportedly be sent to authorized recyclers as per the e-waste disposal norms. There could be several households in the state which have e-waste stored in homes. The citizens may not be aware how to get rid of it. Hence it would be in the fitness of things for NGOs or the respective civic bodies to carry out periodic collection of e-waste.
