The news report "Woman mauled by stray dogs in Vasco; injured (TGE, Apr. 27)", is just one of the several cases of pedestrians and morning walkers being attacked and bitten by ferocious strays that keep terrorising the neighbourhood, attacking residents and even mauling children to death. Even 2 -wheeler riders are not spared by packs of strays, that gang up to attack and bite them without the slightest provocation. Our govt takes pride in declaring Goa rabies-free, by undertaking vaccination drives against the killer rabies. Earlier, there used to be special dog squads to round up strays and ferry them to unknown destinations. Today, these dog squads are nowhere to be seen, which is why there are so may of these dangerous strays roaming the streets , making life risky for residents and others. It is even difficult to sleep peacefully at nights, due to the dog fights. It is therefore time for the Goa govt and the concerned authorities to act without delay, by undertaking a relentless drive to impound these strays, so that people can walk without the fear of being attacked.
