Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday sought to defuse the controversy surrounding former MP and NRI Commissioner Narendra Sawaikar’s “termites” remark made via his Facebook handle but later deleted.
Sawant sought to clarify that the comment was not aimed at students or youth engaged in protests across the country.
He said the remark had been misinterpreted and politicised.
“Everything is being politicised out of habit by some,” Sawant told reporters.
The Chief Minister defended Sawaikar, a senior BJP functionary, insisting that his words were not directed at young people or those agitating even as Opposition parties accused the former MP of insulting students by likening them to termites, sparking sharp criticism.
Sawant said the controversy was being fuelled for political gain and dismissed attempts to link the remark to ongoing students stir in the face of mounting pressure on the BJP across the country due to the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) led agitation.
