Elderly couple rescued from flood waters at Benaulim

MARGAO: Fire personnel and local youth rescued Eknath and Vasuda, an elderly couple, as their house was marooned at Tolleaband-Benaulim due to overnight incessant rains.

The incident occurred early Saturday morning when the couple called for help and assistance after the flood waters rose dangerously around their house. After the incident was brought to his notice, the village talathi alerted the Salcete Mamlatdar John Fernandes and the fire brigade.

The Mamlatdar told The Goan that the fire brigade had plans to physically lift 80-year-old Eknath, but dropped the idea as the small culvert was found weak and dangerous to cross. “At this time, some local boys managed to get a small boat which was then used to rescue Eknath to safety,” the Mamladar said.  Vasuda told The Goan that water started gushing around their house since Friday evening, but pointed out that they decided to wait to move out in the morning. “When we found the water level rising dangerously, we asked for help,” she added.
