PANAJI: Goa could be developed as a “Coastal Economic Zone” under the Sagarmala project. Union Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan in a reply presented in the Lok Sabha has informed that among the 14 Coastal Economic Zones being developed under Sagarmala Goa has been clubbed with South Konkan.
“For promoting port-led industrialisation, 14 Coastal Economic Zones (CEZs) covering all the Maritime States and Union Territories have been identified as part of the National Perspective Plan under the Sagarmala Programme. The Perspective Plans for all 14 CEZs have been prepared in consultation with relevant state governments and central ministries,” minister Radhakrishnan said in his reply.
Among the list, the South Konkan Coastal Economic Zone includes the states of Maharashtra and Goa and covers the districts of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, North Goa and South Goa with the potential industries being identified as Refining, Steel and Food Processing.
According to the minister, port-led industrialization through the proposed development of CEZ under Sagarmala Programme is expected to provide impetus to the “Make in India” initiative of the Government of India, that will aid in the creation of jobs in India. Finalization of institutional framework and roadmap for the development of CEZ based on the recommendations of Inter-Ministerial Committee has been taken up.
The Ministry of Shipping also informed the Lok Sabha that the Government is taking up beautification of a few lighthouses under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode for the promotion of tourism.
Among the eight lighthouses identified for ‘beautification’ under the private-public partnership includes the Aguada lighthouse at Goa.
