MAPUSA
Attempts to outsource the maintenance of vegetable and fish market in Mapusa have failed to get adequate response despite best efforts from the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).
The MMC had twice floated tenders to outsource the vegetable and fish market but so far, no one has come forward to take up the job.
The civic body has no other alternative but to refloat the tender for the third time and hoping that someone will come forward.
“Despite our best efforts, we have not managed to make any headway over the outsourcing plan simply because no one has come forward to take up the job. We had tendered the work twice, but no agency showed up,” said Clen Madeira, Chief Officer, Mapusa Municipal Council.
He informed that the civic body was in the process of re-floating the tender for the third time. The chief officer had invited tenders for outsourcing of door to door collection of municipal solid waste from municipal market and housekeeping of vegetable and fish market complex.
The estimated cost for the service was fixed at Rs 39.05 lakh per year. The council in one of its meeting had already given a go-ahead to outsource the maintenance of the vegetable and fish market, as the civic employees failed to take adequate steps to maintain day-to-day cleanliness in both the markets.
MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar had also recently admitted that the civic workers were unable to maintain cleanliness in the fish and vegetable markets.
“The decision to outsource cleanliness is in the interest of the people who visit the market. So far, the civic workers were doing the job but we thought we could try and outsource it for better results,” Kavlekar said.
If the plan to outsource the maintenance of the vegetable and fish market clicks with good success rate, MMC has plans to outsource a host of other services in the city.
