The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has instructed its Signal Station to transmit hourly security messages to alert ships at anchor and ships plying off the Goa Coast, following an advisory by Meteorology Department warning of sea turning rough near the coast and low-lying areas.
Speaking to the media, MPT Dy Conservator Capt. Manoj Joshi informed that the alert message was received by MPT from INCOIS (department studying waves movement) and accordingly he had instructed the MPT Signal Station to transmit security alerts every hour.
Capt. Joshi also informed that as per the advisory, waves could be rough and could reach a height of 2.5 to 3 metres from 10.30 am on Saturday till 11.30 pm on Sunday.
“As per the advisory, smaller craft should not venture into the sea and various other water-related activities may be suspended during this time. Also we are sure, district administration must have issued the advisories to the local bodies.”
“From our side, we have instructed our signal station to transmit the security message every one hour, so that ships at anchor and ships plying off Goa Coast may be alerted.”
“There is a possibility that sea will be rough near the shore and low lying areas and waves could attain heights of up to 3 mtrs. My advice to all people, fishermen and coastal population to be cautious during the period,” said Capt. Joshi. The advisory has stated that boats plying very near the coast may be avoided during this period as the coastal regions will experience its effects more, adding that boats may be anchored at a fair distance from each other to avoid collision and damage.
“Water-based recreational activities at the coast may be suspended and taking boats to the sea and back can be avoided. The effects of these events in the open ocean is likely to be minimal.”
