A photo indicating a crack on the tarred surface of Zuari bridge went viral on social media, prompting a team of PWD engineers to conduct an inspection of the bridge on Friday morning.
According to reports, a number of people who ply along the Zuari bridge on a daily basis became anxious after a photo showing a crack on the tarred surface of Zuari Bridge went viral on social media.
The PWD was eventually alerted of this message and a team of PWD engineers rushed to the Zuari Bridge for a thorough inspection, as the team checked for cracks on the tarred road on the Zuari bridge.
While reporters tried to interact with the PWD engineers on duty during their inspection, they declined to comment on grounds that they were not authorised to speak to the media.
“The PWD has issued a circular saying only an authorised superintendent from the monitoring department in PWD’s Altinho office can speak to the media,” said one engineer at the site.
Though the outcome of the inspection and whether the photo depicting the crack on the tarred surface was genuine or not were not available, motorists have claimed that there are several cracks on the tarred surface of Zuari bridge.
Later speaking to reporters, Swapnil Bandekar, a two-wheeler rider travelling on the bridge, said he too had received the photo of the crack on Zuari bridge on WhatsApp.
“This bridge is used by several hundreds of vehicles everyday and the photo that went viral is very scary. I am also nervous, but we have no option but to use the bridge till the new bridge is ready. I urge the government to take care of this bridge and to carry out regular maintenance,” said Bandekar.
Another motorist, Pritam Naik, said it was high time the government takes serious note of proper maintenance of the Zuari bridge.
“I urge the PWD to not only inspect the bridge but also to act on their reports. They have carried out an inspection but no one knows the findings of their inspection.”
“The government should carry out regular maintenance of the Zuari bridge and must also update the public regarding the findings of those inspections, so that public don’t have any anxiety while using the bridge,” said Naik.
