Managing Director of Goa Waste Management Corporation Levinson Martins has proposed collection and disposal of waste by bulk waste generators, including housing societies and public utilities such as the Nehru stadium, at source.
Participating at the Sunday Dialogues arranged by the Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Sunday, Martins said there’s a provision in law mandating the bulk waste generators to go for composting within their premises. “This will reduce the load at Sonsodo and help streamline garbage collection and disposal,” he said.
When the MLA pointed out that it would not be practical to implement the concept for a host of reasons, including paucity of space, Martins said the same can be implemented initially at the SAG Complex, Fatorda where land is not an issue.
The GWMC MD also suggested that the MMC make provision for leachate tanks at all the garbage collection trucks to prevent spillage of sludge and leachate from the trucks.
The MLA also insisted the MMC clean up the garbage vehicles everyday before getting them on the roads.
